A Study on the Health Care of Yonsei Students, Staff and Faculty


Abstract
Postal surveys were done twice, in June and September 1971, on the illness and health care patterns of the all staff and faculty of Yonsei University, excluding those of the medical center, and of 693 University students who were randomly sampled as 10% of the undergraduate studentbody. A total of 891 people (344 staff and faculty, 547 students) were studied.. The students¢¥ response rates were 67.5% in June and 57. 4% in September. The staff and faculty responded 82. 3% and 72. 5% respectively.
The results were as follows:
I. The monthly prevalence rate of self-reported illness was 23.3% in May and 31.6% in
August for the students and 26.2% and 23. 1% respectively for the staff and faculty.
2. The treatment rate for illnesses was 73. 6% for the students and 63.8% for the staff
and faculty. They obtained their treatment most frequently from drug stores.
3. The hospital admission rate for one year was 51/1, 000 students and 58/1, 000 staff
and faculty.
4. The incidence of surgical operations for one year was 6611,000 students and 35/1,000 staff and faculty.
5. The dental treatment service rate for one year was 203 treatment/1, 000 students and 363 treatment/1, 000 staff and faculty.
6. The rate of drug purchasing, without doctor¢¥s prescription, reached around 50% per month both by the students and the staff and faculty.
7. Seventy percent of students stated that their health care expenditures were not too high. Forty percent of the staff and faculty said that their expenditures were burdensome,
however, 30% of them said that they were not too high.
8. Sixtythree percent of the students and 77% of the staff and faculty said they wanted
to join the health insurance program.
9. The respondents said they would utilize approximately twice as much medical services if the cost were not burdensome.
